Inspiring the Next Generation of River Keepers With theJames River Association

To help people truly envision what's been lost — and won — in the decades-long fight to restore the James River, Capitol Interactive produced the first virtual reality experience ever made for a river: a 3D animated journey that takes viewers underwater through four centuries of the James, from pristine wilderness to pollution to recovery.

The James River 360 Experience
400 Years

of the James River's history captured in a just-over-three-minute underwater VR journey

The story

The First VR Experience Created for a River

For more than 40 years, the James River Association has worked to restore the James River to full health. JRA was founded in 1976, when a group of concerned citizens banded together to protect a waterway then known as one of the most polluted in America. Over four decades of watershed restoration, student education, advocacy, and community conservation, JRA has helped improve the river's health from a grade of D- to a B- in its biennial State of the James report — an achievement recognized internationally with the 2019 Thiess International Riverprize. But despite that progress, the work is far from done. JRA needed a way to help people truly envision what had been lost in the river's degradation, and what stands to be gained in achieving a Grade A James.

Key steps

Our Approach

Capitol Interactive set out to tell the entire story of the James River — researching its ecological history and animating it from the ground up using the same 3D software found on Hollywood film productions. The result, created in part through funding from the National Park Service Chesapeake Bay Office, is a just-over-three-minute immersive journey that takes viewers underwater through four centuries of the river's life.

Hollywood-Grade 3D Animation

Rather than rely on existing footage, the team animated the river from the ground up using professional 3D software typically reserved for feature films — capturing the sense of wonder and responsibility that comes with viewing nature's most incredible underwater scenes.

A Journey Through Time

The experience opens in the pristine, life-filled James that existed before English settlers colonized Jamestown, advances to the brown, murky, and nearly lifeless river of the mid-1970s, and brings viewers to today's much-improved — but not yet fully restored — James, ending with a clear call to action.

Immersive 360° Storytelling

Delivered as a 360-degree 3D video viewable in VR headsets, the experience surrounds the viewer in the river itself — turning abstract water-quality data into a visceral, unforgettable understanding of what's at stake for a fishable, swimmable, and drinkable James.

Our philosophy

The Results

Created the first virtual reality experience of its kind ever made for a river.

Gave the public and students a powerful new way to envision the James's past, present, and full potential — transforming water-quality statistics into an emotional, immersive story.

Launched publicly through a June 2020 webinar featuring JRA's CEO Bill Street, James Riverkeeper Jamie Brunkow, and Capitol Interactive, distributing the 360-degree 3D video alongside VR headsets for enhanced viewing.

Earned regional press coverage and advanced JRA's mission to protect the James River and connect people to it.

Highlight

When You Change the James, the James Changes You

By bringing the James River to life through immersive 3D animation, Capitol Interactive and the James River Association proved that virtual reality can do more than entertain — it can build empathy for the natural world. The experience invites a new generation of river keepers to see what's been lost, celebrate what's been restored, and take action to protect the James for the future.
